portland

i just donated to this. you should think about it.
i also suggest you read claire's new piece on Prince in the new yorker if you haven't yet.
this week has been real life in gray then sun then gray portland. exploring time mixed with working mixed with unpacking time as created a lot of coffee shop hopping, a lot of long afternoons playing vinyl with open windows, and short bursts of exploratory bike rides.
so far the most workable cafe's i've found are as follows:
extracto in the morning
albina press in the afternoon
crema around lunch if a table presents itself - otherwise forget it.
concordia coffee shop for all the filler.
im caffeinated, slightly hung and in need of a dance party. suggestions?
thanksgiving is on its way. where will you spend it?
im heading to the coast - cabin - cooking - friends and strangers. pretty excited.
its always interesting to take a family tradition and transfer it to friends. a group of girls last night we were, sitting around the table talking shop about recipes to be made. "you dont have deviled eggs?!?" "you like cranberry from the can?!?" "bread?" each person has expectations of time tested treats, im guessing our table will be overflowing.
fun
so yes... looking forward to turkey. painting our kitchen. mixtape in a day - friends bought a bag of 44 tapes and since i still cart around a gigantic tape deck we will be making the ultimate mix tape. pretty stoooooked about it. and um early december will be bringing n8 van dyke up north which should get me to start exploring the pearl and make me miss san fran a bit. check out his show if you get a chance.
do you have an ebony hillbillies album i can borrow?
this week ive been a little obsessed with jenny lewis - acid tongue, deer tick, lykke li and the crusaders.
sometimes i just cant believe that i ever was a smoker and sometimes i forget im not. it sounds a bit pathetic but its utterly blown that i dont have a little package of time filler in my purse. hrm. LOVE IT.

a calculator and a camry
i don't even know how long i've been back in this country. my days on this road to reentry to a life that is a changing has been lovely. and long. and i need a massage to help my neck and the knots your and everyone else’s couches have given me.
so just now i'm sitting on the plane. man wielding calculator on my right. type typing he is though i've spent 30 minutes trying to figure out what he’s figuring and i can’t imagine. currently at 451.
this most recent travel has taken me from fairfield for i think a MONTH, bikes with eric, libraries with cole, vanessa, selling textiles and hearing punk rock in basements. pumpkins, bonfires and summertime, fall and cold air, then portland. met up with roommate annie (yes annie and ayni), hit up several empty houses, a birthday party, jenny and mike’s, trilby time, slept on lucas’ couch surrounded by action figures, awoke at 5 am to grab a plane to long beach, got scooped by elizabeth, drove to del mar, met my then future step-family, drank margs in encinitas with dimick’s. surfed with my dad, ran with dogs on the beach, was the oldest person in the bar? had seriously indulgent hotel time (yes to hotel parisi), donned a dress, read a poem, felt the most true sense of happiness ever for my father and his now wife’s most beautiful wedding. words cannot describe. danced the night away with the friends that make up my family. seriously rocked out with my mother. bbq’d, zooed, played with kids in the waves, played with boys in leucadia, took a train to LA, was a MAVERICK at Risk, barely left silverlake, walked, ate amazing tamales, hit up cheetah’s with zach++, sunday mornings at jesse’s, ladies time at jeni’s, read books cuddled and got my kid time with clea and moni, found my nani, sat in LAX for hours, now here. with the calculator. having slight dejavu and moving NW.
so ill spend the next few days driving back across this country. if you’re in boulder, boise, or portland lets go for a walk or a drink and play.
also, somehow roped into planning 10 year high school reunion hrm. luckily im seeing so many people in so many places ive had a chance to ask what people want. suggestions? requests? just let my mobile office AKA gmail know.
some things i noticed along this way:
fan of dr. dog. addicted to hall and oates. really enjoy tile combos.

find myself invariably making your couch seem like home by downloading mad men, wrapping in sarong, and taking really long showers. yes - i am the increase in your water bill. also walks. with so many cities in so few weeks i start to forget that the flavor of where i am is drastically different than the place i've just been before.
my sister has a lovely new tattoo.
three really deep breaths gets rid of those little butterflies that pop up when flights get canceled, moving men don’t show up, beds are lost or you meet the right person at the wrong time.
i speak to myself in indonesian.
Tiffany Bozic’s show at Fecal Face Gallery opened a few days ago. If you’re in San Fran you should check it.
there are so many people in airports, on trains, waiting for buses i hear talking that are actually voting for McCain. Please dont forget to vote, please vote early if its an option for you, and please remind others - AKA your conservative grandparents - why this election is so important for America. and please dont give me any of that passive bullshit about how it doesn't matter either way.
um seems as though i cant find my 401K. helloooooo? heeeeelllllo?
i officially have some wrinkles.
there is flat WATER that comes in a can and i am currently drinking it.
i have incredible friends. and they are developing, producing, and contributing to amazing things. it makes me proud and my heart flutter a little at their talent and happiness.
Eko Nugroho has a new show up: 'MultiCrisis is Delicious' at the Semarang Gallery
i think about calling kayla barnes every single day.
i have yellow shoes and some form of ADD. i daydream daily about a room with a door and a book and a whole day of not leaving.
http://www.boxdoodle.com/ this is fun.
The part of being in America where I really start to miss Bali has kicked in. It doesn't mean I don't want to be here but i crave a hoodie and bare feet, hand on lower back, guitar strumming, boys laughing, kids playing and my beach. that water. those waves. i miss tania’s and ian’s and robin’s and noel’s. i want riam and suzi time, zion time, thor time and bodhi. i want dance parties at Home and motorcycle rides past sawa. im figuring out slowly how to make a dream of both countries each year a reality.
for the meantime is grad school applications, new priorities and settling in. well at least it will be after this next road trip. please come visit in portland because i don't want to go anywhere for awhile.

moldy
so while attempting to research mold today i found out about this
im sortof obsessed with moldy mold as my entire basement is filled with it, and since thats where all my physical belongings reside most of my day has been wiping mold, breathing mold, being disgusted by mold. my favorite kicks have even turned into mold flowers and subsequently now live in the dumpster behind bonnie's china deli. so any advice?

also... i bought a painting of some mexican wrestlers in san fran and i lost it. have you seen it? maybe i left it in someone's car or on the bus. hrmmmm.

back
america feels like riding around on bikes listening to neil young without pause. im confused about being back. i landed in san fran - ran around for crazy days, played the role of emily's housewife and smiled in my coffee cup. then up to portland to find out thats where ill make my next home. days of laughing with girls the best cocktails trilby time and strippers. then to idaho to find out how tall my brother is and meet a million republicans. now iowa.
i miss asia. i miss bali. i miss perpetual smiles and my motorbike. im working on a line that if caught will take me down to south america in the spring. there are possibilities in south africa. i cant believe im going to sign a lease. but i am and i will be living in this here country for at least a year. if not more. so come play with me. for the next two weeks ill mostly be riding around looking for foxes.

some things of late
the other day i looked out my bedroom window down to the washing machine and saw a lizard larger than i cat. “my fucking god” i screamed and it jumped off and waddled away into our garden. waddle i say because it was actually large enough to have enough weight to require a waddle. this is not an exaggeration... the height of a regular cat, but wider and longer.
another interesting site... my normal drive from sanur to renon takes me from a 3 lane one way to a 2 lane two way... i zip that drive quite often as it leads me to seminyak, and renon is the home of my preferred internet cafe, not to mention the home of the man i visit most. so anyway, after some sort of music industry conference (i just used the wifi and said hello) im driving through, hit the two way and all of a sudden my little motorbike has to slow to about 40. well this of course is killing me because as always im late for the next place im supposed to be, so i weave back and forth until i get to the front of the line of this slow waiting traffic. oh of course... how could i not have guessed. there was a giant replica of the volcano Batur and its accompanying lake plopped on top of a giant yellow truck. a fucking volcano. it was too wide to scoot around the truck as the sides of it stuck off and one as tall as me (at a whopping 5’3’’) would have taken a head off. so i drive behind this volcano for awhile... the plastic trees making up the forest surrounding the lake were actually quite amazing... and then a thankful left onto the bypass to head home. the actual Batur by the way is totally worth a visit if youre here. its a quick but ass kicking hike, straight up a little slippery from the leftover volcanic sand, best done at about 4 am. you reach the top in time for sunrise and all of a sudden its magic morning looking over clouds, until they separate and you get to see the stunning shining blue of Lake Batur squinting back up at you.
ahhh a drive in bali. i actually run into quite a bit of trouble on my bike. its not the driving of the bike thats a problem, or even the insane traffic that now seems not very insane. rather its my constant habit of running out of gas and/or popping a tire. the gas tends to not be a problem as there always seems to be some kind young 14 year old riding by with no helmet happy to take my waiting (yes i keep one in my bike for this very purpose) aqua bottle and fill it with bensin. maybe thats my problem... ive made friends with all the petrol/bensin sellers in my area that i feel badly buying gas from the actual station. to clarify there are gas stations, and then there are a million bensin “stands” on the side of the road where you pay about 10 cents more to fill your tank with some cut diesel... which means it runs out faster... which propagates my run out cycle. which i guess keeps things interesting.
anyway... life is good these days and ive bought 2 of the 5 tickets necessary to get to my destination in India 12 days from today. cant wait... although of course its when you plan to leave that work always picks up and the youth center is garnering more and more support and hopefully at the end of August the afternoon program will begin to complement the courses we already have running.
ok back to indexing and james pants for me. oh and by the way... can somebody please tell me what thurston moore is doing working with starbucks?
also im totally behind the times as i live in asia but the lakai video, fully flared is killer
happy father’s day.
